Kia automobiles are recalling various models due to detachable components that might cause roadway risks; affecting approximately 300,000 vehicles.
Kia Recalls Over 300,000 Vehicles Due to Loose Exterior Trim Parts
In a significant move to address safety concerns, Kia America has issued recall notices for over 300,000 vehicles of its Telluride and K5 models. The recalls were announced in July 2023, following investigations into loose exterior trim parts that could detach while driving, posing potential hazards for other road users.
The recall affects 201,149 Telluride models from 2023 to 2025 due to faulty door belt moldings. In these vehicles, the long, narrow strips at the top edge of the door where the window meets the metal frame (door belt molding trims) may loosen and fall off.
For the K5 models, the recall concerns the C-pillar garnish face plates - decorative panels near the left and right rear windows - that may loosen and detach. This issue affects 100,063 vehicles and is due to a supplier quality issue.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has warned that these loose parts can become road hazards, increasing the risk of crashes for other drivers. If the face plate detaches from the vehicle while in motion in the recalled K5 models, it can create a road hazard for other road users, increasing the risk of a crash. Similarly, detached trim pieces in the recalled Telluride models can create a road hazard for other vehicles.
To rectify these issues, Kia dealerships will provide free inspections and replacement of the affected parts. Vehicle owners will receive official notification letters starting September 26, 2023, but owners can also proactively contact Kia or a dealership for early inspection and repair.
Owners can check if their car is affected by visiting the NHTSA recall website. Kia will also reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred, as announced in a General Reimbursement Plan filed May 1, 2024.
At present, the NHTSA has opened an investigation into Tesla Model S electric car fires, but this does not involve Kia vehicles at this time.
This recall addresses safety concerns by ensuring the defective trim pieces are secured or replaced to prevent detachment on the road. By doing so, Kia aims to maintain the safety and integrity of its vehicles and the roads for all users.
- In light of the recall, Kia owners may incur additional expenses due to the free inspections and replacement of faulty parts.
- After participating in sports, it is advisable to check if their Kia vehicle is part of the recall to ensure the safety of the vehicle and other road users while driving.
