Khunying Kalaya initiates a fresh political party
Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich, a prominent figure in Thai politics, has made a significant move by resigning from the Thai Democrat Party after more than 25 years. In a bold step, she has co-founded the Thai Kao Mai Party (New Step Thailand Party) alongside Suchatvee Suwansawat.
The new party, established in 2022 and headquartered on Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok, is gearing up for an official launch in the coming weeks. Khunying Kalaya, known for her work in education and technology policy, believes that the strength of the Thai Kao Mai Party lies in principles and public trust, rather than funding.
In an interview, Khunying Kalaya expressed her conviction that Thailand needs fresh ideas to tackle pressing challenges. She paid respects to the statue of the Earth Goddess Mae Thorani, the party's emblem, before leaving, symbolising her commitment to the party's values.
Khunying Kalaya did not express concerns about competing with larger parties. Instead, she emphasised the importance of renewal within the Thai Democrat Party, stating that it should create space for younger generations to drive policy innovation. She called for those who value education to join forces in transforming Thai politics through science and technology.
Chuan Leekpai, former leader of the Thai Democrat Party, offered his blessings for Khunying Kalaya's future endeavours. Khunying Kalaya bid farewell to senior figures, including Leekpai, before formally submitting her letter of resignation at Thai Democrat Party headquarters.
Mr. Suchatvee, a co-founder of the Thai Kao Mai Party, has pledged not to return to the Thai Democrats and instead build a new movement of his own. The party's priorities include education, science, technology, and sustainable water management, which Khunying Kalaya believes are urgent priorities for national development.
As for Khunying Kalaya's future political role in the Thai Kao Mai Party, she has not yet stated her intentions. However, she emphasised the need for renewal within the Thai Democrat Party and the importance of aligning her new party with the Thai Democrats' founding commitments.
This move by Khunying Kalaya is a significant development in Thai politics, as she aims to bring fresh ideas and a focus on education, science, technology, and sustainable water management to the table.
