Fender Releases Laura Lee Ochoa's Signature Bass Model

Fender has unveiled a new signature electric bass guitar, designed in collaboration with Khruangbin's bassist, Laura Lee Ochoa. The model, inspired by an affordable knockoff Fender Jazz Bass that Ochoa has played throughout her career, is designed to be accessible for beginners.

The bass closely replicates the look and feel of the original instrument, deviating from the traditional Fender Jazz Bass design. Key features include:

  • DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups, which faithfully replicate Ochoa's unique tone and help reduce buzzing, making it easier for beginners to play without unwanted noise.
  • Vintage-style concentric volume and tone knobs, adding to the vintage aesthetic and providing rugged, user-friendly control over the instrument's sound.
  • A custom "U"-shaped neck, tailored to Ochoa's preferences for comfortable playability and feel.
  • A rosewood fretboard with 21 jumbo frets, supporting Ochoa's distinctive playing style and tone.

Ochoa emphasized the bass's user-friendly design, particularly the reduced buzz from the humbucker pickup, as a core benefit. This signature bass is notable for celebrating a customized knockoff instrument that was personally meaningful and practical for Ochoa, rather than a high-end classic Fender model.

In addition to Ochoa's signature model, Fender also released a signature electric guitar for Khruangbin's Mark Speer in June. However, the guitar that Speer has used for over two decades remains undisclosed.

Issue 595 of the website is now available from Magazines Direct. This issue features new interviews with Kiki Wong and Billy Corgan.
