Khatanga’s Remote Villages Face Food Crisis as Ice Roads Fail

Remote settlements in Khatanga are struggling with food shortages after unusual weather disrupted supply routes. Normally, winter deliveries rely on ice roads, but this November’s conditions have made them impassable. Local authorities are now seeking urgent solutions to restock villages before the situation worsens.

The Khatanga administration has requested help to transport food using high-mobility vehicles, as traditional ice roads remain unusable. A hovercraft was sent to deliver essentials to Novaya and Zhdanikha, while a helicopter carried 2.5 tons of supplies to Katyryk. These emergency measures come after residents in Kheta and Novaya accumulated over 1 million rubles each in unpaid debts for goods.

The crisis has pushed Khatanga to rely on alternative transport methods, including hovercrafts and helicopters. With debts rising and weather conditions unpredictable, authorities are adjusting supply chains to prevent further shortages. Future deliveries may shift to air or river routes, depending on the season and available infrastructure.
