Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, skipped the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort in Delhi on August 15, 2023, according to reports. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched an attack on Gandhi for his absence, while the Congress party maintained that they are committed to democracy and the constitution.

The flag-hoisting ceremony took place at Indira Bhawan in Delhi, where Gandhi stood alongside party president Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress leaders and workers were also present at the ceremony. The party shared visuals and updates of the event on their social media handles.

Gandhi's Independence Day greeting emphasized building an India rooted in truth, equality, and brotherhood. It did not contain any negative or derogatory remarks towards any political party or leader, nor did it mention any attendance at the Red Fort celebrations.

The BJP criticized Gandhi's absence from the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. BJP spokesperson Poonawalla called Gandhi a "lover of Pakistan" in a TV debate, a comment that sparked controversy. No official statement was made by Gandhi or the Congress party explaining the absence in detail, but sources suggested dissatisfaction with the prior year's seating arrangements contributed to his decision to not attend.

Last year, Gandhi reportedly skipped the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort because he was upset with the seating arrangement from the previous year. Instead of attending the event, he paid tribute to the country's freedom fighters via social media and joined celebrations elsewhere in New Delhi, such as Indira Bhawan.

Gandhi's Independence Day greeting highlighted the importance of protecting the pride and honor of India's precious heritage. The Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge, hoisted the flag at Indira Bhawan on the occasion of Independence Day.

The BJP's criticisms of Gandhi's absence from the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort were made on various platforms. However, the Congress party remained focused on their commitment to democracy and the constitution, reiterating their duty to protect the independence of the nation.
