Alex Michelsen, a 20-year-old tennis player from Laguna Hills, California, has made history by reaching the quarterfinals of the prestigious Canada Masters 1000 tournament. The right-handed player, who turned professional in 2023, secured his place in the next round with a victory over Learner Tien.

The fast court at the Canada Masters 1000 proved to be a favourable surface for Michelsen, who won the match in just 80 minutes. Two critical moments in the match saw him secure early breaks to lead 2-0 in the first set, preventing a potential comeback from Tien. Michelsen's solid and aggressive play was evident, as he capitalised on Tien's 20 unforced errors.

Meanwhile, Russian Karen Khachanov, ranked 16th in the ATP, also advanced to the quarterfinals. Khachanov defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud (No.8) with a score of 6-4, 7-5. Khachanov's superior first serve performance was a decisive factor in the match, as he won 97% (29-30) of his first serve points.

Khachanov expressed his satisfaction with the match, stating, "I have nothing to complain about... My plan worked, my first serve winning percentage was very high."

Michelsen, approaching his 21st birthday on the 25th of this month, was also pleased with his performance. He said, "I feel great, it's uncharted territory from here on."

This is a significant win for Michelsen, marking his first advancement to the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 tournament. For Khachanov, the victory over Ruud marks his first victory against a top 20 opponent since October 2024.

Michelsen's progress at the high-tier Masters 1000 level is a testament to his growing potential as a contender in these demanding ATP events. With his career-high ATP singles ranking around No. 30 to No. 34, he is poised to make a lasting impact in the world of tennis.
