Khabarovsk Theater Revives Love and Doves with a Romantic Twist

Khabarovsk Musical Theater has premiered a romantic musical comedy based on Vladimir Gurkin's classic play Love and Doves. The production, directed by Tatyana Stolbovskaya, brings a fresh take on the beloved story of family, forgiveness, and rural life. Tickets for the opening performances on March 6 and 7 sold out rapidly.

The stage adaptation stays true to Gurkin's original play, where protagonist Wasja Kusjakow returns to his wife after an affair. However, unlike the 1984 film by Vladimir Menshov—which added humour, expanded side plots, and a happier ending—the theatre version blends elements from both. In the film, Wasja rediscovers his love for Nadja, while the secondary character Ljubaschka is rejected. The production also includes iconic lines from the movie, like 'Myocardial infarction, just look at that scar!' and 'Lyudka, oh Lyudka!'

The cast features notable performers, including Olga Golovina, a Merited Artist of Khabarovsk Krai, as Raisa Zakharovna. Antonina Belaya, from the Khabarovsk Regional Drama Theater, takes on the lead role of Nadya. Adding to the spectacle, live doves appear on stage, carefully integrated into scenes with specialised lighting.

This new interpretation of Love and Doves combines nostalgia with theatrical innovation. The use of live birds, familiar dialogue, and a mix of dramatic and comedic elements aims to resonate with audiences. The production continues the story's tradition of celebrating love, forgiveness, and the warmth of rural family life.
