Khabarovsk Region gears up for a busier 2025 river transport season

River transport in the Khabarovsk Region is preparing for a busy season ahead. Official figures show nearly 150,000 passengers used the services in 2024, marking steady growth. Now, with repairs nearly finished and new routes planned, authorities are focusing on upgrades to improve access for remote communities.

The 2025 navigation season will begin in stages. Khabarovsk's river routes open on May 1, while suburban services in Komsomolsk-on-Amur start two weeks later, on May 15. The intermunicipal line linking Komsomolsk, Bogorodskoye, and Nikolayevsk-on-Amur will follow on June 2.

Last year saw a notable rise in passenger numbers, with over 127,000 travellers—an 8.8% increase from the previous year. To maintain this growth, the regional government has allocated over 400 million rubles (around $4.4 million) for transport services. Competitive bidding is also underway to select contractors for summer routes and northern territories. Despite progress, challenges remain. Lawmakers have highlighted the need to modernise the aging fleet and build new barges. Upgrading boarding and disembarkation points is another priority, especially for residents in hard-to-reach areas. Deputy Transport Minister Oleg Kindeyev confirmed these updates during a recent briefing.

The upcoming season will see expanded services and improved infrastructure. With funding secured and repairs nearly complete, river transport is set to play a key role in connecting the region's communities. Officials expect continued growth in passenger numbers as routes become more reliable and accessible.
