Khabarovsk Krai revives Masters Swimming after five-year hiatus in Russia

Over the weekend, Komsomolsk-on-Amur hosted the Masters Swimming Championships for Khabarovsk Krai. More than 50 swimmers took part in the event, which welcomed adults of all ages—from younger competitors to seniors. The championships marked a rare opportunity for enthusiasts to race in a formal setting, as no official Masters events have been held in Russia for five years.

The competition featured races in freestyle, breaststroke, and butterfly across different distances. Among the standout performers was 78-year-old Raisa Kuksenko, who secured first place in the 50-meter freestyle. Another senior athlete, 77-year-old Nikolai Grechkin, dominated the 200-meter freestyle, topping the overall standings.

The Masters series is open to adults typically over 25, with no upper age limit. Participants included both former professionals and amateur swimmers. Organised by the Masters Swimming Federation, the event provided a platform for athletes who rarely get the chance to compete in officially recognised championships.

No other region or city in Russia has hosted a Masters swimming championship in the past half-decade. This made the Khabarovsk Krai event particularly significant for those involved.

The championships showcased the skill and determination of swimmers across generations. With no recent national Masters events, the competition in Komsomolsk-on-Amur offered a rare chance for athletes to test their abilities. The success of the event may encourage more regions to revive similar tournaments in the future.
