During a recent friendly match, he clashed with a teammate, prompting strong condemnation from his club, FC Lugano. The incident follows a pattern of disputes involving the former Bundesliga player.
The altercation took place in a pre-season game against Viktoria Plzeň. Behrens shoved teammate Georgios Koutsias to the ground without clear provocation. He then verbally attacked the midfielder, calling him a 'little freak' and ordering him to 'shut up'.
FC Lugano swiftly responded, issuing a statement that condemned the behavior 'in the strongest terms'. The Swiss club announced it would review the matter internally and consider disciplinary measures. Behrens, however, has yet to comment on the incident. This is not the first time the striker has faced criticism. In late 2024, while at VfL Wolfsburg, he refused to sign a rainbow-themed jersey as part of a diversity campaign. Behrens, a one-time Germany international, joined Lugano in the summer of 2024 after spells with Union Berlin and Wolfsburg.
