My fascination with Kilimanjaro ignited in 2009, but my knack for procrastination often got the best of me. This mountainous behemoth is a considerable commitment - distant, costly, time-consuming, and gear-heavy. So, I'd conjure endless reasons not to embark, until, in 2024, I finally buckled down. Now, I find myself reflecting on why I waited so long.
Some climbers find their motivation through fundraising for charity, others through special milestones, and others through the loss of a loved one, reminding them to seize life. I encourage those in the latter group to ditch the "have to" mentality and instead, simply "want to go." Don't delay like I did, or countless others do. Seize the moment, dive in, fortify yourself with a libation, and click that magical booking button.
Upon touching down at Kilimanjaro International Airport, passengers were a mix of two types: those adorned in neutral colors, pouring money like water, headed for exclusive safaris, and those sporting worn hiking boots, technical attire, and sweaty forehead buffs. These were the trekkers, eagerly peering out windows for their first glimpse of Kilimanjaro. A collective gasp filled the plane upon her grand entrance. From the sky, she loomed large, but on the ground, she seemed like a colossal painting just dropped in front of you. As you delve into the mountain's flanks, she doesn't diminish; quite the contrary, she grows more grandiose as hidden valleys, old lava flows, and incredible rock formations come into view.
For six grueling days, you'll shuffle your feet, one after the other. It's a test of willpower, and the drive within you is something only you can discover. But, the support is indeed a group effort, and the generosity is genuinely out of this world. Trekking in various countries across the globe, I'd imagined various support structures. I'd never encountered anything quite like the warmth and tenacity of the Kilimanjaro crew. Smiles beamed ear-to-ear, and the camaraderie felt almost familial.
On summit night, guides nestled beside you, feeding you, reminding you to hydrate, even tucking away stray hairs that whipped annoyingly against your face beneath a layer of excessive clothing. My teary-eyed encounters will forever be etched in my memory, particularly the tender moment a guide wiped snot from my face. I genuinely believed I'd never conquered this peak without their unwavering support.
Within the trekking team, there's a bond forged during those grueling days and peaceful evenings around camp. Debates ensue, games are played, lives are stripped back to the basics. It's a reminder that we're all in this remarkable, moving, heartwarming journey together.
