Kerala Braces for Heavy Rainfall as IMD Issues Alerts
Kerala braces for heavy rainfall as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issues alerts. District Collector Dinesan Cheruvat has banned quarrying and soil excavation, while adventure activities in hilly regions remain suspended. Schools in several districts are closed as a precautionary measure.
The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala, leading to the declaration of a 'red alert' in Idukki, Palakkad, and Malappuram. Consequently, educational institutions in these districts have been closed. The high ranges of Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur, Kozhikode, and Idukki have already experienced widespread downpours, with more rain expected in the coming days.
In response to the weather conditions, the District Collector of Idukki has ordered the suspension of all water-based recreational activities, including boating, kayaking, and rafting. Additionally, trekking and other adventure activities in landslide-prone areas have been temporarily halted. The IMD has also issued an 'orange alert' for heavy rainfall in Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram, with most districts experiencing overcast skies and intermittent rainfall throughout the day.
The IMD's alerts and the subsequent measures taken by local authorities aim to ensure the safety of residents and tourists alike. The public is advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in vulnerable areas. Further updates on the weather situation will be provided as the situation develops.
