Kenya's Under-20 Lacrosse squad brimming with optimism as World Championship approaches

The Kenya men's national Under-20 lacrosse team is participating in the 2025 World Lacrosse Men's Under-20 Championship, held in Jeju, South Korea. However, the team is grappling with a significant challenge - a lack of financial support from the government.

Despite formal requests from the Kenya Lacrosse Association, the government has not provided any financial aid to the team. This has left the team relying largely on non-government support and the efforts of the association.

The team's patron, Linda Mwende, confirmed that no government aid has been received. She expressed hope for allowances to help cover school fees and support the players, many of whom come from humble backgrounds. Mwende considers the team members as fighters who are determined to make Kenya proud.

Isaac Kirinya, the head coach of the Kenyan team, will be assisted by Vincent Odhiambo, Brimin Koyo, Gideon Maranga, Vincent Nyamweya, Mclean Richard, Remingtone Joshua, and Bonface Agoi. Odhiambo will captain the team.

Kenya and Ghana are the only African countries participating in the global event. The Kenyan team departed for South Korea yesterday and will play their first match against Chinese Taipei on Saturday. They will face Puerto Rico and Germany in their second and third pool matches.

Unfortunately, the Kenyan team did not advance far in the championship, facing tough competition including a 20-4 loss to Israel in placement matches. This indicates the Kenyan government’s financial aid for the lacrosse team remains unfulfilled as of August 2025, with explicit calls for at least some allowance support to ease player hardships still pending.

If the government provides allowances, the team members could clear their school fee balances, which would greatly improve their lives. The team mostly consists of learners from humble backgrounds, and any support would be greatly appreciated.
