Ken Levine Opens Up About BioShock Struggles, Teases New Game Judas
Ken Levine, the renowned game creator behind the BioShock series, has opened up about the challenges he faced while developing BioShock Infinite. Levine, who is now working on his next game Judas with Ghost Story Games, reflects on his past struggles and the evolution of his creative process.
Levine admitted to grappling with self-doubt during the development of BioShock Infinite. He described the process as his 'hardest time,' due to the high expectations he set for himself. Despite his past critical successes with games like System Shock 2 and SWAT 4, Levine felt the pressure to match the unexpected success of BioShock in 2007.
Initially, Levine was pressured to create another game set in Rapture, the underwater city from the first BioShock game. However, he struggled to define what a BioShock game truly was and abandoned the Rapture setting. Levine acknowledged that while creators have unique styles, like Martin Scorsese or Wes Anderson, games are challenging to make differently.
Levine described BioShock as 'a very, very long corridor,' contrasting it with Judas, which is 'made very, very differently.' Levine felt depressed trying to outdo his previous work and wondering if he should stick to his old methods. However, Judas, his next game, promises to have both similar and radically different elements compared to BioShock.
Levine's journey from the success of BioShock to his current project, Judas, has been marked by self-reflection and evolution. Despite the challenges, Levine continues to push the boundaries of his creative process, promising a unique gaming experience with Judas.
