Kemmerich seizes the leadership role as chairman of Team Freedom party
In a significant political development, former FDP member Thomas Kemmerich has announced his departure from the Liberal party and his alliance with Frauke Petry, the founder of the new association 'Team Freedom'. According to German newspaper 'Die Welt', Petry had established the association for this purpose back in May. The exact timing of the plans for the party founding of 'Team Freedom' under Petry's leadership is not clearly detailed. However, it was reported that Kemmerich and Petry had a meeting at Castle Ettersburg in July, which sparked speculation about a possible party exit for Kemmerich. The break with the FDP for Kemmerich was substantially rooted in the Bundestag vote on the immigration restriction law on January 31, where a quarter of the faction refused to give their consent. Kemmerich had dismissed speculation about a possible party exit in July, but the decision-making process had already been far advanced at that time. 'Team Freedom' expresses solidarity with the murdered US activist Charlie Kirk and supports positions that Kemmerich deems as 'reasonable' and 'evidence-based'. The association aims to end the current asylum policy, return to nuclear power, and significantly reduce social benefits. Europe must close its borders, according to 'Team Freedom'. Thomas Kemmerich, the president of the 'Entrepreneurs for Freedom' association, has become the new chairman of 'Team Freedom' on September 19, 2025. Interestingly, Kemmerich does not want to become a member of the party version of 'Team Freedom'. Instead, the association does not seek to run for mandates in parliaments and offices in governments itself, but to support candidates who share the goals of the association. As of now, the association 'Team Freedom' has 18 men and four women. The association plans to select qualified personnel rather than promoting classic party careers. This political move comes at a crucial time, with elections in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Berlin upcoming. The Thuringian FDP is in crisis, as state chairman Thomas Kemmerich, who was briefly Minister-President in 2020, is leaving the Liberals, and state deputy Gerald Ullrich is stepping down. After the meeting, Petry published photos and videos showing her together with Kemmerich, signalling a potential collaboration between the two. It remains to be seen how 'Team Freedom' will impact the political landscape in Germany in the coming months and years.
