Kelsey Leonard: I possess the ability to claim the title of boxing world champion
In the heart of Naas, within a warren of industrial estates, lies the UNIT 3 gym, a hub for boxing enthusiasts and professionals alike. This gym, under the guidance of coach Niall Barrett, is renowned for its focus on brain health and fighter safety.
Barrett's training regimen is characterised by realistic, scenario-based boxing training. Even during sparring sessions, protective gear like body protectors and mitts are utilised, reflecting a commitment to authentic fight conditions. This approach helps boxers like Kelsey Leonard feel well-prepared and comfortable in professional bouts.
UNIT 3 gym has undergone significant expansion in the past couple of years, now featuring a full-scale ring, a three-quarter-size model, and a recovery center complete with a hot tub, cold plunge, and sauna. The gym also offers boxing, strength and conditioning, and core sessions.
Kelsey Leonard, an eight-time Irish amateur champion, is making her professional debut on August 2nd in Belfast. Her passion for boxing started at the age of nine after receiving a flier for her local club in the Curragh. Kira Carter will be Leonard's opponent in her debut fight.
Leonard sees Katie Taylor as a huge inspiration and hopes to continue the legacy of Irish female fighters. Her hard work and dedication paid off last year when she won the Haringey Box Cup, Europe's largest amateur boxing competition.
Meanwhile, coach Barrett is putting Leonard through her paces, conducting infighting drills with multiple pairs of boxers. The intensity of these sessions is evident, with Barrett himself taking a serious beating during training, demonstrating his commitment to preparing his fighters for the real challenges of the ring.
Gary Cully, a 6ft 2ins lightweight boxer, is a familiar face to Irish boxing fans. Colm Murphy will battle Luke Pearson in the main event of the same event. Leonard's training is being tailored for her upcoming four two-minute round fight, ensuring she is well-prepared for the rigours of professional boxing.
Leonard's debut fight will be broadcast on the Spórt TG4 YouTube channel, giving fans the opportunity to witness this exciting new talent in action. As she steps into the ring for the first time as a professional, it's clear that Leonard is well on her way to achieving her goal of becoming a world champion and potentially multiple-time world champion.
