Keeping Streets Safe in Winter
Winter has arrived in Landshut, and city officials are reminding residents of their duties to keep sidewalks and bike paths safe. Property owners must clear snow and ice by specific deadlines—or face potential hazards and penalties.
The rules apply to all, with extra attention on key areas like the Altstadt and streets near Isarstraße and Schrannenstraße.
Homeowners and adjacent property owners are legally required to clear snow and ice by 7 a.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. on Sundays and public holidays. Front and rear property owners share responsibility for the pedestrian path in front of the front property, ensuring a minimum cleared width of 1.20 metres.
Clearing must continue throughout the day until 8 p.m. if conditions remain hazardous. If surfaces stay slippery, abrasive materials like coarse sand or grit must be applied. The use of road salt or corrosive de-icing agents is banned due to environmental harm, though eco-certified alternatives carrying the 'Blue Angel' label are permitted. Key areas must stay accessible at all times. This includes drainage channels, fire hydrants, manhole covers, pedestrian crossings, and bus stops. Cleared snow and ice cannot block traffic and must be removed from streets by the next day. In residential zones—particularly the Altstadt, Niedermayerstraße, and areas around Isarstraße and Schrannenstraße—parked vehicles must leave at least 3.05 metres of clearance. This ensures emergency services, waste collection, and municipal snowploughs can pass without obstruction.
Landshut’s winter regulations aim to keep pathways safe and emergency routes open. Residents who fail to comply risk creating hazards for pedestrians, cyclists, and service vehicles. The city has stressed that adherence to these rules is essential for public safety throughout the season.
