KBO unveils 2023 rule changes: stricter pitcher checks and expanded video reviews

The Korean Baseball Organisation (KBO) has announced new rules for the 2023 season. Pitchers will face stricter checks for illegal substances, while umpires gain more flexibility in video reviews. A new utility position award will also recognise versatile fielders. From next season, umpires must inspect starting pitchers at least twice per game. Relief pitchers will undergo one mandatory check. Previously, inspections only happened if suspicions arose or the opposing team requested them. Now, anyone caught with foreign substances will be ejected and suspended for 10 games.

The KBO has also expanded video review powers. Umpires can now correct a separate call while reviewing another play. This change aims to improve accuracy without slowing down games. In addition, the league will introduce a utility position award. To qualify, players must log 540 defensive innings across the season, with at least 50 innings at three different positions. The move follows Major League Baseball's (MLB) approach to honouring all-round fielders.

The new rules mark a shift in how the KBO monitors pitchers and reviews decisions. Stricter substance checks and broader replay powers will change game dynamics. Meanwhile, the utility award gives recognition to players who excel in multiple defensive roles.
