Kazakhstan's Youth Boxing Tournament Honors a Legend and Shapes Future Champions
The 24th International Youth Boxing Tournament has officially begun in Turkestan. Held in honour of the late Olympic champion Bekzat Sattarkhanov, the competition kicked off with a flag-raising ceremony at the Olympic Center. Over 250 young boxers from seven countries and across Kazakhstan are now vying for titles in the ring. The opening ceremony saw prominent figures in attendance, including Nurbek Turashbekov, deputy governor of the Turkestan region. Olympic champion Yermakhan Ibraimov and Syrlykul Sattarkhanova, mother of the tournament's namesake, also joined the event. Their presence highlighted the significance of the competition in Kazakh boxing history.
The tournament features 252 athletes—209 male and 43 female—competing across 15 weight categories. Men will contest 10 divisions, while women will fight in five. Matches will continue until April 4, with the results shaping Kazakhstan's youth national team. For Bakyt Sarsekayev, head coach of the youth squad, the event serves as a key selection platform. He is scouting talent for upcoming Asian and World Championships, as well as the Youth Olympic Games. The performances here will determine which boxers represent the country on the international stage.
The tournament not only celebrates the legacy of Bekzat Sattarkhanov but also provides a pathway for young boxers to advance their careers. With athletes from multiple nations and regions competing, the event sets the stage for future successes in Kazakh boxing. The final team selections will be announced after the competition concludes on April 4.
