Kazakhstan’s Uralsk faces salt shortage as transport rules disrupt supplies

Salt has vanished from shop shelves in Uralsk, western Kazakhstan, leaving residents struggling to find basic supplies. The shortage has lasted for days, affecting both large supermarkets and small local stores across the region.

Deliveries of salt to the West Kazakhstan Region stopped nearly a month ago. The halt came after new regulations demanded the use of only Kazakh railway cars for transport. The main supplier, Berezovsky Salt Mine, has been unable to ship salt from Russia due to a lack of available domestic rolling stock.

The salt shortage continues to disrupt daily life in Uralsk. With deliveries stalled and local production insufficient, residents are watching prices closely. They hope supplies will return soon and remain within reach for households across the region.
