Kazakhstan's Film Critics Association Joins International Federation

The Kazakhstan's Association of Film Critics has made a significant step in joining the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI). This membership marks a new era for Kazakh film criticism, offering increased international visibility and opportunities for collaboration.

Established in 2014, the Kazakhstan's Association of Film Critics has grown from a small group of seven members to 26 by 2024. The association's head, Gulnara Abikeyeva, is a prominent figure in the Kazakh film industry. Abikeyeva's extensive portfolio includes serving as an art director, author, and member of various international film organizations.

Abikeyeva's involvement with FIPRESCI dates back to her role in international film festivals. As a member of FIPRESCI, she has served on critics' juries at events in Anapa, Berlin, Wiesbaden, Karlovy Vary, Cottbus, Oberhausen, and numerous other cities.

FIPRESCI, founded in 1930, is a global organization that unites film critics and scholars to develop world cinema and protect the rights and interests of film experts. The federation has played a crucial role in supporting film art and promoting new developments since its revitalization post-World War II.

The membership of Kazakhstan's Association of Film Critics aligns with FIPRESCI's mission of uniting diverse film criticism cultures and fostering international dialogue and exchange. This membership offers the association access to FIPRESCI's global network, enabling participation in juries, awards, and mentorship programs.

In addition to Kazakhstan, film critics and scholars from other Central Asian countries, such as Kyrgyzstan, have also been granted FIPRESCI membership. Notable members include Sultan Usuvaliev, a film critic and director, and Gulbara Tolomushova, a film critic and journalist.

The Critics' Choice Film Award, an annual event celebrating the best achievements of Kazakh cinema, was established by the association. However, due to the pandemic, the award has only been presented nine times. Despite this, the association continues to promote Kazakh cinema on the global stage through its membership in FIPRESCI.

Abikeyeva's writings on cinema have been published in both Kazakh and international press. She has contributed reviews to the International Film Guide yearbook and articles to the FIPRESCI website, KinoKultura, and Cinemaya. Her work as an author extends to several books on Kazakh and Central Asian cinema.

With this new membership, the Kazakhstan's Association of Film Critics becomes an integral part of FIPRESCI's international community, furthering the development of world cinema and the protection of film experts' rights and interests.
