Kazakhstan's Film Critics Collective Affiliates with FIPRESCI
Gulnara Abikeyeva, a renowned Kazakh film scholar and critic, has taken her expertise to the international stage by becoming a member of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI). As the President of the Kazakhstan's Association of Film Critics, Abikeyeva has been instrumental in fostering greater global awareness of Kazakh and Central Asian cinema.
The Kazakhstan's Association of Film Critics, established in 2014, has grown from an initial membership of seven to 26 members by 2024. The association's membership in FIPRESCI, reported on Jan. 21, marks a significant milestone for Kazakhstan's film community, as it connects them with film critics and scholars from around the world.
Abikeyeva, who has served as the art director of the Eurasia International Film Festival in Almaty from 2005 to 2013, has been a regular member of critics' juries at international film festivals in cities such as Anapa, Berlin, Wiesbaden, Karlovy Vary, Cottbus, and Oberhausen. Her role involves critically assessing films from diverse cultural contexts, helping to elevate and recognize cinematic works on the global stage.
In addition to her work with FIPRESCI, Abikeyeva has contributed scholarly articles and critiques to prominent international film publications, exploring topics related to Central Asian cinema, post-Soviet film landscapes, and global cinematic trends. Her works have been published in the Kazakh and international press.
Sultan Usuvaliev and Gulbara Tolomushova, film critics and journalists from Kyrgyzstan, have also been granted FIPRESCI membership, further strengthening the organisation's presence in Central Asia.
FIPRESCI, founded in 1930, unites film critics and scholars globally with the purpose of developing world cinema and protecting the rights and interests of film experts. The network also includes the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema, of which Abikeyeva is a member.
The Critics' Choice Film Award, celebrating the best achievements of Kazakh cinema, was established by the Kazakhstan's Association of Film Critics. However, due to the pandemic, the award was presented only nine times. Despite the challenges, the association continues to support the development and recognition of emerging filmmakers from the region at international venues.
