Kazakhstan's Defence Ministry assesses troop morale in Almaty region reforms

A working group from Kazakhstan's Defence Ministry has completed an assessment of morale and living conditions in military units across the Almaty region. Led by Deputy Defence Minister Major General Askar Mustabekov, the team inspected facilities and met with personnel to address concerns over welfare and discipline.

The delegation began by touring barracks, mess halls, and other infrastructure to check service conditions firsthand. Mustabekov also held private conversations with conscripts, asking about their health, morale, and daily challenges.

During a meeting with officers and non-commissioned officers, he emphasised the need for stricter discipline and a stronger sense of patriotism. The group reviewed appeals from troops and evaluated how commanders were implementing social protections. Mustabekov later outlined broader state policies, highlighting constitutional reforms as a foundation for military stability. He stressed that decent service conditions and psychological support were essential for a strong army. Since 2020, the ministry has introduced modern training, upgraded equipment, and expanded welfare—including psychological counselling centres in 2022 and salary increases in 2024. He issued new instructions to further improve social support and ideological work within the armed forces. Caring for servicemen and their families, he noted, remains a top priority for the Defence Ministry.

The inspection follows years of reforms aimed at boosting morale and modernising the Kazakh Armed Forces. With updated training, better equipment, and stronger welfare measures, officials report a noticeable improvement in soldiers' psychological well-being. The ministry's latest directives will build on these efforts to ensure long-term stability and readiness.
