Kazakhstan’s Crackdown on Traffic Violations Shows Mixed Road Safety Results

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Internal Affairs has been cracking down on traffic violations since early 2025, implementing stricter enforcement and advanced technologies to enhance road safety. Despite these efforts, over 29,000 accidents and more than 12 million violations have been recorded.

The ministry has introduced mobile surveillance units and drone patrols to monitor roads covertly. The TOR platform has been implemented for vehicle tracking. However, the primary causes of crashes remain speeding, driving into oncoming traffic, drunk driving, and pedestrians crossing in undignated areas.

Average speed controls on eight highways spanning 2,000 kilometers have shown promising results. These measures have led to an 11% decrease in fatalities. Since the beginning of 2025, over 21,000 drunk drivers have been detained, and over 25,000 drivers have had their licenses revoked. Additionally, over 401,000 pedestrians have been fined for crossing roads in unsafe areas.

While the Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs continues to enforce stricter traffic laws and implement advanced technologies, the number of road accidents and violations remains high. Authorities are urged to maintain their efforts and consider further measures to improve road safety.
