Kazakhstan’s Bold Leap Into the Global Digital Economy

Kazakhstan is transforming its digital landscape to become a key player in global data traffic. The country plans to turn its strategic location into an economic advantage by processing and redistributing international data flows. Recent investments in infrastructure and partnerships with major tech firms signal a shift toward a new economic model driven by data and computing power.

In mid-2024, Kazakhstan had 66 data centres, but most were outdated and designed only for corporate use. They lacked the capacity for next-generation digital services, prompting a push for modernization. The Akashi commercial data centre in Astana, built to Tier IV standards, now offers 100 MW of capacity. It has already attracted major operators like China Mobile International and Fortinet.

Kazakhstan's new infrastructure projects position it as a growing hub for data transit and digital services. The combination of high-capacity fibre-optic lines, modern data centres, and international partnerships will strengthen its role in the global digital economy. The country's focus on reducing latency and increasing reliability could attract further investment in the coming years.
