Kazakhstan's Akmola Region battles black ice with emergency highway convoy
Heavy rain and black ice have caused major traffic disruptions across Kazakhstan's Akmola Region. On February 16, worsening conditions forced authorities to temporarily close a key section of the Astana–Pavlodar highway. Nearly 200 specialised vehicles were sent out to clear roads and spread de-icing materials in response to the hazards.
The severe weather struck on February 16, prompting officials to restrict access to one of the region's main roads. Rain and freezing temperatures turned surfaces into dangerous sheets of black ice, making travel treacherous for motorists.
By February 17, police organised a controlled convoy to guide vehicles safely along the Astana–Pavlodar route. The group included 620 cars in total—220 trucks and 400 passenger vehicles—all escorted under strict supervision. Before departure, officers held briefings to remind drivers of speed limits, safe following distances, and convoy procedures.
Road crews worked around the clock, deploying gritters and ploughs to treat icy patches. Despite their efforts, temperature swings continued to create hazardous conditions. Authorities have repeatedly warned drivers to reduce speed and stay alert, though no official reports of accidents on the highway have been released so far.
The convoy system helped hundreds of vehicles navigate the icy roads without reported incidents. Police and maintenance teams remain on high alert as freezing rain persists. Drivers are still being urged to take extra precautions when travelling in the region.
