Kazakhstan to Launch Autonomous Air Taxis for Faster Tourism Travel

Kazakhstan is preparing to launch autonomous air taxi services in a bid to boost tourism and cut travel times. The government expects the high-speed flights to attract up to 8 million visitors each year, with 4 million heading to the Alatau region alone. Officials also plan to finalise new drone regulations by the end of 2024 to support the project.

The new air taxis will slash the journey from Almaty International Airport to the Medeu skating rink to just 10 minutes. Travelling at over 300 kilometres per hour, they will carry both passengers and cargo under a strict flight schedule. Authorities aim to roll out the service this year, pending legal approvals.

Kazakhstan has set its sights on purchasing several dozen aircraft from Joby Aviation, a US-based manufacturer. While no official contracts have been announced, the government is moving forward with plans to integrate the technology. The project forms part of broader efforts to modernise transport and increase visitor numbers across the country.

If successful, the air taxis could transform travel in Kazakhstan by offering rapid connections between key destinations. The government's push for new regulations and infrastructure suggests the service may become operational within months. Officials have not yet confirmed alternative suppliers if the Joby Aviation deal does not proceed.
