Kazakhstan secures 11 medals in the youth world wrestling championship held in Athens.
In the bustling city of Athens, Greece, the Youth World Championships in wrestling recently concluded, showcasing a fierce competition among the world's best U17 wrestlers across various weight categories and styles.
The Men's Freestyle category saw several standout performances from American competitors. Keegan Bassett clinched the gold at 45 kg, while Samuel Sanchez, the returning U17 World champion, repeated his success at 51 kg. Jayden James and Tanner Hodgins also added to the USA's tally with their gold and bronze wins at 71 kg and 92 kg respectively.
David Dzebisov, representing UWW, and Amirali Abas Alizadeh from Iran also shone at 92 kg, with Dzebisov taking home the gold and Alizadeh securing the silver. The podium was completed by Said Pashayev from Azerbaijan, who claimed the bronze.
Ariah Mills added another gold for the USA at 48 kg, while Arseni Kikiniou and Grey Burnett secured silver and bronze for Georgia and the USA respectively at 65 kg and 60 kg.
The Greco-Roman Wrestling category was not left behind in the excitement. Bunyod Hasanov from Uzbekistan took the gold at 48 kg, followed by Nurdaulet Kumaruuly who finished second for Kazakhstan. Abdulaziz Kholmurzaev from Uzbekistan also clinched the gold at 80 kg.
In the Women's Wrestling category, Morgan Turner, Epenesa Elison, and Taina Fernandez brought home gold, silver, and gold respectively for the USA at 49 kg, 53 kg, and 61 kg. Emma Bacon competed valiantly but was eliminated at 57 kg.
Other notable gold medalists include Magomedrasul Omarov from UWW at 110 kg in men’s freestyle and Madhiya Usmanova, who won the gold at 57 kg in the women’s freestyle.
The competition was a testament to the high level of talent and determination among the youth wrestlers, with top teams such as Iran, USA, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan gathering multiple medals. The Kazakhstan team, in particular, impressed, winning 11 medals according to their National Olympic Committee.
Notable individual achievements include Janazhol Kuanyshbek's win at the Greco-Roman wrestling under 45 kg category, Marlene Meirbekuly's third place finish in the Greco-Roman wrestling under 71 kg category, and Bekasyl Asambek's bronze medal in the freestyle wrestling under 60 kg category.
