Kazakhstan Open 2025: A G-1 Taekwondo Tournament Set to Boost International Ties
The Kazakhstan Open 2025, a prestigious G-1 category international taekwondo tournament, is set to take place in Astana from August 14 to 16, 2025. Held at the Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace, the competition will bring together over 750 athletes from 23 countries, including Olympic champions and world-renowned competitors, competing across cadet, junior, and adult divisions under the latest international rules.
The tournament has attracted high-profile attendees such as World Taekwondo President Dr. Chungwon Choue and the Asian Taekwondo Union President. The event marks Kazakhstan’s return to hosting major G-1 taekwondo tournaments after an eight-year hiatus and aims to strengthen Kazakhstan’s position in international sports. It also sets the stage for future significant events, including the 2026 Grand Prix Final and a planned bid for the 2027 World Championships.
The Kazakhstan Open 2025 introduced advanced KPNP K-2 electronic scoring systems with new gloves for accurate strike detection. Participating countries include Afghanistan, Armenia, Canada, France, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Luxembourg, Morocco, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, China, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and neutral-status participants.
Recent highlights include success by UAE’s Sharjah Women’s Sports Clubs athletes who won several medals, demonstrating the tournament’s high competitive level and international representation. The total prize fund for the event is 15.8 million tenge (around US$33,000).
Key future events related to this tournament include the 2026 Grand Prix Final, planned to be hosted in Kazakhstan, and a bid for the 2027 World Championships. This tournament also featured a performance by the World Taekwondo Demonstration Team and symbolized international cooperation, highlighted by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s meeting with Dr. Choue and mutual honors exchanged. During the meeting, President Tokayev awarded Choue with the Order of Dostyk (Friendship), second degree. In return, Choue gifted Tokayev a ninth dan black belt in recognition of mutual respect and cooperation.
