Kazakhstan battles spring floods with controlled explosions and drainage clearing

Four regions in Kazakhstan have launched large-scale operations to prevent spring flooding. Controlled explosions, drainage clearing, and river ice blasting are underway. The measures aim to protect infrastructure and populated areas from water damage.

In Akmola, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, and Karaganda regions, authorities are using explosives to break up ice on rivers and lakes. On the Karasu River in Aiyrtau District, blasting work is targeting thick ice buildup. Nearby, Lake Imantau has seen 900 square metres of ice cleared through similar methods.

Rescue teams in Karaganda are focusing on drainage systems. They have dug 750 metres of new trenches and cleaned 4,900 metres of irrigation ditches. Additionally, 344 drainage pipes were cleared to ensure smooth water flow. These steps follow earlier ice-blasting efforts in East Kazakhstan, which drew international attention. North Kazakhstan Region is also conducting controlled explosions to reduce flood risks. Alongside blasting, crews are reinforcing dikes, draining pumps, and preparing evacuation routes where needed.

The combined efforts cover ice removal, drainage maintenance, and structural reinforcements. Officials state the operations will lower flood risks for nearby towns and critical infrastructure. Work continues as temperatures rise and meltwater levels increase.
