President Tokayev Tackles Alarming Drug Situation in Kazakhstan
In a bid to address the increasingly alarming drug situation, both in Kazakhstan and globally, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has outlined a series of initiatives to combat the issue.
Addressing the Security Council on countering narcotics, as reported by CMN.KZ, Tokayev highlighted the need for stricter state control and prohibition of drug production and sale. He advocated for a dual policy that is flexible towards addicts but uncompromising towards the drug trade.
The president emphasized that the state's policy should be flexible towards drug addicts, but strict and intolerant towards drug trafficking. Production and sale of any kind of drugs must be strictly prohibited and heavily controlled by the state, according to Tokayev.
Tokayev's initiatives also focus on strengthening measures against drug addiction and drug trafficking. He urged enhanced prevention efforts through education and information campaigns, better statistical data collection, and tracking chemical flows.
The president stressed the need to intensify the monitoring of suspicious financial flows related to drug trafficking. He also emphasized the importance of fighting transnational organized crime, specifically targeting the organizers of drug stores and labs.
In addition, Tokayev ordered increased efforts in drug prevention, particularly in education and information spheres. He tasked officials with addressing the insufficient coverage of drug addicts and their families with medical and rehabilitation services.
The president also denounced the social stigma that causes addicts to hide their problems, urging improved medical and rehabilitation coverage. He condemned the romanticization of drugs online and in media as dangerous to youth.
Following the meeting, Tokayev reminded that countering narcotics is impossible without the active involvement of society. He called for the formation of a national headquarters coordinating government agencies to comprehensively fight drug addiction and drug-related crimes at national and regional levels.
These efforts reflect a comprehensive approach treating drug addiction as not only a health issue but also a social, economic, and legal challenge with national security implications in Kazakhstan and globally.
