Meet Kay Rosen, the 80-year-old American language artist, gracing the Weserburg Museum in Bremen with her first European solo exhibition starting this Friday. Ingo Clauß, the curator, deems her one of the leading language artists of her generation. Interestingly, this is her first European museum solo exhibition despite her impact in the field .

Rosen plays with words in captivating ways: she alters letters, changes their sequence, or highlights them in vibrant colors. These tweaks can drastically transform words' meanings. For example, she reorganizes the alphabet letters to create "HI," yet with a twist. She isn't just about entertaining wordplay but often weaves political messages into her works .

Take her response to social discrimination against AIDS sufferers in the 1990s. She displayed on American buses posters filled with over 20 synonyms for "aid," alluding to the word "aids" for impact. Her art, however, isn't limited to worrying societal issues; it also reflects on historical events like the September 11 attacks, Barack Obama and Donald Trump's presidencies, and Hurricane Katrina .

The Weserburg will present Rosen's latest creation, "Soundtrack." It's a six-piece artwork in which the black censor bars transform "Disco" into various phrases—from "Discover" to "Disco Fever." As the UN Climate Change Conference approaches, Bremen plans to display another poster, updating "Warming" to "Warning" by highlighting the second part of the letter "m."

From intriguing word paintings to politically charged installations, Rosen's exhibition promises an immersive exploration of language as art .
