New Polish President Karol Nawrocki to Pursue Nationalist, Euroskeptic Agenda

Karol Nawrocki, a 42-year-old historian and supporter of the right-wing conservative opposition party PiS, has been elected as Poland's new president. Nawrocki, who is also an amateur boxer and a fan of former US President Donald Trump, emerged victorious from the runoff election in early June, defeating liberal Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski [1].

Nawrocki's presidency is expected to have significant political implications for Germany and the EU, marked by a nationalist and more Euroskeptic stance, stronger alignment with the US, and a likely continuation of controversial judicial reforms.

Regarding the EU and Germany:

  • Nawrocki is seen as Brussels-wary and likely to continue Warsaw’s confrontational stance toward the EU, particularly concerning EU competencies and judicial reforms. This posture has contributed to a breakdown in relations between Poland and Brussels in recent years and may persist or intensify under his presidency [2][3].
  • With a nationalist agenda, Nawrocki's government may resist EU pressure to change Poland’s judicial reforms, which have previously strained relations with the EU and caused tensions with Germany as a leading EU member committed to rule of law standards. This could prolong or exacerbate political deadlock between Poland and EU institutions [3].

Regarding relations with the US:

  • Nawrocki has openly aligned himself with Donald Trump and the United States, signaling a strengthening of Poland-US ties and a focus on security cooperation within NATO. His first official trip as president will be to the US for talks with Trump, emphasizing the importance of transatlantic relations in his foreign policy [4][5].

In addition to his foreign policy, Nawrocki's policy platform includes opposition to illegal migration, support for the Zloty (Polish currency), and skepticism towards the Euro [6]. He also wants to push for the controversial construction of a major airport near Warsaw and the expansion of Polish ports [7].

Nawrocki's presidency may also bring changes to Poland's judicial system, as he has called for the restoration of the rule of law and the repair of the judiciary, although his past associations with the criminal underworld due to his past work as a bouncer have raised concerns [8].

Nawrocki succeeds Andrzej Duda, who is leaving office after two terms. Upon taking office, Nawrocki took a confrontational stance against the government of Donald Tusk [9]. He has also made anti-German and anti-European remarks during his campaign [10].

In a bid to reorganize the presidency, Nawrocki announced that a new council at the presidency would deal with the reorganization [11]. He also stated that he wants Poland to take a leading role in building the strength, immune system, and responsibility for NATO's eastern flank [12].

Nawrocki has also expressed his support for all modernization efforts of the Polish army and wants to make it the largest NATO force within the EU [13]. He has also emphasized the importance of international alliances for Poland, including with the USA, and taking care of Poland's position within NATO [14].

One of Nawrocki's most ambitious goals is to have a new constitution drafted by the year 2030 [15]. This move could further deepen Poland's political polarization and potentially strain relations with the EU and Germany.

  1. Karol Nawrocki's presidency could result in a contentious migration policy, as he opposes illegal migration and may adopt a tough stance on asylum seekers.
  2. Nawrocki's Euroskepticism, driven by his nationalist agenda, may lead to disagreements within the EU, particularly with Germany, regarding judicial reforms and competencies.
  3. Politicians and analysts are closely watching Nawrocki's foreign policy, specifically his strong alignment with the US and his potential impacts on war-and-conflicts, policy-and-legislation, and general-news due to his commitment to NATO, international alliances, and a more confrontational approach towards Brussels.
