Fresh Take on Poland's New Far-Right President & its Global Implications
Karol Nawrocki, a proponent of nationalist ideals, secures victory in the Polish presidential election.
Host:
Say hello to your new Polish president, far-right historian and unlicensed pugilist Karol Nawrocki. He narrowly claimed victory, edging out his center-left opponent, Rafal Trzaskowski, by a single percentage point. With high voter turnout, NPR's Rob Schmitz dives into what Nawrocki's presidency may spell for the world of Europe.

SCHMITZ: The jubilation among supporters of Karol Nawrocki mirrored their relief as his unexpected win denied victory to the center-left candidate Rafal Trzaskowski who is a close ally of Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk. A man many on the right perceive as steering Poland onto the wrong track.
President Nawrocki: (Speaking Polish)
SCHMITZ: "No longer will Donald Tusk's reach extend so far that the corrupt, disregarding power strips us of our dreams and steals our aspirations," said an animated Nawrocki to his roaring audience. As part of Poland's far-right Law and Justice (PiS) party, Nawrocki's win in an election where Rafal Trzaskowski, pro-European Union, multilingual mayor of Warsaw, led throughout the campaign, was somewhat of a shocker.
Jacek Kucharczyk: He [Trzaskowski] was painted by Nawrocki as anti-tradition, anti-religion, anti-church, left-wing force.
SCHMITZ: Political analyst Jacek Kucharczyk suggests that the surprise parliamentary defeat of Nawrocki's PiS party in 2023, after eight years in power, was a liberating experience for many Europeans concerned about the rise of populism and nationalism in Poland. However, Kucharczyk predicts that this presidential win for the PiS signals that many Polish voters are still apprehensive about forthcoming liberalism diluting their national identity - a fear that resonates across numerous international arenas.
Kucharczyk: Fears of migrants, fears that our society will change, the conviction that Western European societies, having embraced multiculturalism, have blundered, mainly by tolerating migration and promoting cultural diversity.
SCHMITZ: Kucharczyk speculates that many supporters of Nawrocki may have been inspired by the victory of U.S. President Donald Trump. Poland and the United States enjoy a close relationship, and President Trump welcomed Nawrocki during a visit to the White House last month. Kucharczyk further indicates that Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government had planned future policies under the assumption that Trzaskowski would triumph. But now, he says, those plans will have to be reworked. Donald Tusk remains committed to combating ascending populism in Poland, but with Nawrocki's election victory, the battle just got tougher.
