Karnataka’s new science scheme sparks debate over funding and execution

The Karnataka State Cabinet approved the Mukhyamantri Vidyarthi Vigyan Vari scheme in June 2025. The initiative aims to boost scientific interest among students by offering educational rewards. However, debates over funding and implementation have already sparked controversy.

The scheme proposes educational visits for winners of science project competitions. State-level finalists would receive trips to NASA, funded by an annual budget of around Rs3 crore. Tehsil and district-level winners would also get study visits, paid for through District Planning and Development Council allocations.

The Mukhyamantri Vidyarthi Vigyan Vari scheme is now official policy. It will fund science-related trips for competition winners, with a focus on inspiring deeper engagement in research. However, concerns over prize money and implementation remain unresolved.
