Karl Schmidt-Rottluff's New Museum Constructed - at His Childhood Residence - Karl Schmidt-Rottluff's new museum opens in his ancestral home

You might've heard that the dusty old pile in a modest corner of Chemnitz is anything but ordinary. It's the former abode of none other than Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, a major player in theExpressionist movement we call Die Brücke. And guess what? It's now a gleaming museum, thanks to a European Capital of Culture 2025 project! 🏛️

This Sunday, the grand unveiling will take place with a celebration befitting a living legend. The Minister President of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer (CDU), waxed lyrical about the upcoming event, stating we'll be honoring an artist whose work was once targets of the National Socialists' wrath.

Born under a different name in 1884 (Karl Schmidt, to be exact), our protagonist hails from Rottluff, a quaint village near Chemnitz. After completing high school, young Karl traded the rolling hills of Rottluff for the bustling streets of Dresden to study architecture, little knowing that would set him on a path towards artistry and fame.

Collaborating with the trio of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Bleyl, and Erich Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff co-founded the artist group "Bridge" (Die Brücke) in 1905, later adding his birthplace's name to his moniker. And voila! Our dearest Chemnitz gained another district. 🌆
