Karin M. Lang begins her tenure as the new deputy director for the AI sector.
New Deputy Director at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT): Karin M. Lang
The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) has announced a new addition to its leadership team. Karin M. Lang, a senior career diplomat with over 30 years of professional experience, has officially taken office as the new Deputy Director of the AIT.
Ms. Lang's extensive diplomatic career spans across various global regions. She has served in economic and consular assignments in Havana, Bangkok, Guangzhou, China, Mexico City, and most recently, in Taiwan. In her most recent role, she served as coordinator for Cuban affairs in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs from 2022 to last year.
During her tenure, she also held domestic posts such as director of the Office of Policy Coordination and Public Affairs in the US Bureau of Consular Affairs and director of the executive secretariat staff in the office of the US secretary of state. Notably, she served as minister-counselor for the US Bureau of Consular Affairs and consul general at the US embassy in Tokyo from 2019 to 2022.
Ms. Lang's dedication to her work has been recognised with the department's Mary A. Ryan Award for Outstanding Public Service in 2015. She is fluent in Spanish and Chinese, making her a valuable asset in her new role.
The AIT, which functions as the de facto U.S. embassy in Taiwan, handling official diplomatic and consular duties despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties, has welcomed Ms. Lang as its new Deputy Director. This senior leadership position within AIT's Taipei office is instrumental in managing key political, economic, and consular functions related to U.S.-Taiwan relations.
Taiwan is a global leader in cutting-edge technologies, as stated in a recent announcement. Ms. Lang has expressed enthusiasm about continuing the close strategic and economic collaboration between the US and Taiwan, particularly in cutting-edge technologies.
Ms. Lang replaced former AIT deputy director Jeremy Cornforth, who left his post earlier this year.
