2022 Russian Karate Championship Set to Take Place in Yekaterinburg

The 2022 Russian Karate Championship will be held in Yekaterinburg from August 22 to 24, marking the third time the event has taken place in the city. However, specific details about the schedule, rules, and notable athletes for this year's championship remain unavailable.

Russian karate competitions, particularly in the Kyokushin discipline, are represented by various federations, including the Federation of Kyokushin Karate of Russia (FKKR), Russian National Federation of Kyokushinkai Karate (RNFKK), and others, all united under the Kyokushin Association of Russia accredited by the Ministry of Sports. These federations follow international Kyokushin organizations like WKO, IKO, IFK, and KI, each with their own ruleset in full-contact karate.

Notable athletes in the Russian karate scene include Vladimir Sidorenko, a two-time Russian champion and five-time European youth champion, active around 2018-2019. The competition will feature renowned athletes from the Russian National Team, including the winners of the European Championship held in May - Ernest Sharafigdinov and Ahmed Ahmedov.

The rules of the World Karate Federation will be followed during the tournament, with full-contact Kyokushin competitions typically involving knockdown karate rules, emphasizing powerful strikes without protective gear, and decided by knockouts, points for clean strikes, or judges’ decision.

The event will take place at the Palace of Judo, a modern and comfortable venue. The competition aims to encourage as many Russians as possible to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle, and is part of the state program "Sport of Russia." The results of the competition will influence the selection of athletes to represent Russia at the European Championship.

Moreover, the competition will determine the composition of the national team to represent Russia at the European Championship in 2026 in Germany. The program will include competitions in kata for individuals with disabilities, intellectual impairments, and seated athletes. In the Sverdlovsk region, approximately 7,500 people regularly practice karate.

Leonid Rapoport, Minister of Physical Culture and Sports of the Sverdlovsk region, expressed confidence in the karatekas and looked forward to victories. Previously, representatives of the Sverdlovsk region became bronze medalists in big tennis at the Spartakiade. The goal of the state program is to develop mass and professional sports, build and modernize sports infrastructure, and increase the accessibility of sports facilities.

In the Russian karate scene, the 2022 Russian Karate Championship in Yekaterinburg will be a significant event, showcasing the skills of renowned athletes from various federations, including those from the Russian National Team, such as Ernest Sharafigdinov and Ahmed Ahmedov. This competition, where specific rules from the World Karate Federation will be applied, encourages an active and healthy lifestyle and may influence the selection of athletes to represent Russia at upcoming European Championships.
