Karaganda's Nauryz celebrations blend tradition with modern innovation
Nauryz celebrations have filled Karaganda Region with colour and tradition. Central squares now resemble ethnic aul villages, complete with themed yurts and lively events. The festivities kicked off with a theatrical performance and have drawn large crowds eager to join the fun.
The celebrations began with 'Üsh Kökek, Nauryz' (Three Larks, Nauryz), a theatrical show that set the tone for the holiday. Karaganda's Central Park of Culture and Recreation became the heart of the event, featuring a picturesque aul with yurts dedicated to crafts, daily life, and national cuisine. Visitors also explored artisan stalls, trade pavilions, and interactive zones like altybakan swings.
Ermagambet Bulekpayev, the region's akim, addressed the crowd, stressing unity, respect, and personal renewal as key themes of Nauryz. His speech was followed by performances from artists such as Nurlan Onerbayev, Marzhan Arapbayeva, and the Zhigitter band, who took to the stage to entertain the gathering. Traditional sports also played a major role, with competitions in kazak kuresi (wrestling), asyq atu (bone tossing), archery, and tug-of-war. Alongside these, a robotics exhibition showcased innovations, including work by Damir Magzhan from the Murager school team. The blend of heritage and modernity reflected how Nauryz has evolved in recent years, with past events featuring drone displays and digital festivals. Guests praised the organisation, noting the joyful atmosphere and the variety of activities on offer. From food stalls to cultural displays, the celebrations catered to all ages and interests.
