Kapalua Departure Compulsory in 2026 - Exploring 5 Possible Replacement Locations
The PGA Tour has announced that the 2026 edition of The Sentry Tournament of Champions will not be held at Kapalua's Plantation Course due to ongoing drought conditions on Maui. While the exact location for next year's tournament remains uncertain, several potential venues have been mentioned.
One such possibility is Waialae Country Club, the current home of the Sony Open. The tournament's organisers have expressed an interest in hosting The Sentry back-to-back weeks in January 2026. The Sony Open is known for its gentle start, mirroring the conditions pros might encounter at The Summit. This similarity could make Waialae an appealing choice for The Sentry.
Another candidate is Shadow Creek, a course with a rich history. It was the home of The Sentry from its inception in 1953 until 1958. Known for commanding the highest green fee in the USA, Shadow Creek has hosted several notable golf events, including The Match, The CJ Cup, and the LPGA Tour's Match Play event.
Omni La Costa, the tournament's most recent former host course, is also in the running. The resort stages the NCAA D1 Golf Championships annually and is capable of putting on an elite-level event. Sherwood Country Club, site of the World Challenge, could be another option. It has staged high-profile tournaments like the Shark Shootout, the Zozo Championship, and the PGA Tour Champions' PowerShares QQQ Championship.
The Summit Golf Club, where The CJ Cup was held in 2021, offers a potential site for The Sentry. Its amazing scenery would not detract from the competition, as demonstrated by Rory McIlroy's win at The CJ Cup with a 25-under-par total.
Torrey Pines temporarily hosted the Genesis when it was forced to move away from Riviera Country Club, suggesting a similar approach could work for The Sentry at Waialae Country Club.
The PGA Tour's agronomy team visited the area in early September and determined that the Plantation Course may not be prepared to a sufficient standard for the event in January 2026. Despite this, the Sony Open and the PGA Tour Champions' Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai are scheduled to go ahead as planned in January 2026.
The PGA Tour is yet to confirm a new site for The Sentry in 2026. As the decision approaches, golf enthusiasts eagerly await the announcement of the tournament's new home.
