In the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs are off to a tough start, and their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, celebrated his 30th birthday amidst the challenges. The Chiefs, who are currently winless, are grappling with spotty protection from their offensive line and the absence of three wide receivers expected to make a significant impact.

Mahomes, who jokingly stated that he has been feeling 30 for a long time due to having children, completed just 58.8% of his passes and averaged 222.5 yards passing in losses to the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs picked Jalen Royals in the fourth round of the draft out of Utah State, but both he and Xavier Worthy, who returned to practice on Mahomes' birthday, have hardly played due to injuries.

The Chiefs' roster also includes Josh Simmons, an offensive tackle selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, who impressed on the offensive line and is expected to play a role in the offense. However, the 2022 draftees Skyy Moore and Joshua Williams, who were initially part of the offense, have been sidelined due to injuries and have not emerged as expected offensive contributors post-injury recovery.

Marquise Brown is the only pass catcher with more than six receptions for the Chiefs, leaving a void that the returning wide receivers could potentially fill. The Chiefs are trying to keep an eye on the workload of tight end Travis Kelce, who turns 36 next month, but Reid dismissed any concerns about "load management" for Kelce. He also stated that Kelce's age is not a factor in their management of his workload.

Rashee Rice, who could have provided additional support, is currently in the midst of a six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. Mike Danna (quad) and Kristian Fulton (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday for the Chiefs.

As the Chiefs prepare for Sunday night's game against the New York Giants, both Worthy and Royals will have no restrictions in preparing for the match. The Chiefs will be hoping that the returning wide receivers can provide a much-needed boost to their struggling offense.
