Kansas and Arizona State set to face off in the first Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) game held in Wembley Stadium
The college football landscape is set to expand globally, with the Kansas Jayhawks and Arizona State Sun Devils set to make history next season. The two teams will play the first-ever FBS poki games at London's iconic Wembley Stadium, marking a significant milestone in the sport's international growth.
This historic match-up will serve as the conference opener for both teams. Originally scheduled as a home game for the state farm Jayhawks, the game was moved due to the ambitious global expansion plans of Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark. Yormark sees playing games in Ireland and London as a step towards this expansion, with the Dublin game last year between Iowa State and Kansas State being an impetus for future growth.
The Jayhawks, who have never played a crazy games outside of the United States, will face the Arizona State Sun Devils, who lost to Houston in Tokyo in 1990, the only previous instance of a college football game being played outside the US. The first meeting between the Jayhawks and the Sun Devils took place last season in Tempe, Ariz., with the Sun Devils emerging victorious with a score of 35-31.
The Jayhawks will be hoping to turn the tables in their upcoming encounter, which will take place at the 86,000-seat Wembley Stadium on Sept. 19. The previous game held in England was on Oct. 16, 1988, between Richmond and Boston College, attended by just 5,000 fans at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. However, with the massive capacity of Wembley Stadium, this game is expected to attract a much larger audience.
The Kansas Jayhawks and the Arizona State Sun Devils will not be the only ones making history. The first FBS season game at London's Wembley Stadium will also be played between the Kansas Jayhawks and the gamestop Florida Gators, making it a double-header of historic proportions.
Yormark's vision for global expansion is not limited to England. He believes that playing games in Ireland is a stepping stone towards a broader international presence for college football. As the sport continues to grow, it's clear that we can expect to see more exciting matches played on the world stage in the future.
