Kamchatka Paralyzed as Record Snowfall Cuts Power and Halts Travel
Heavy snowfall has brought Russia’s Kamchatka Territory to a standstill this week. The extreme weather has disrupted transport, closed roads and left thousands without power. Authorities are now racing to clear snow and restore services as conditions worsen.
The region received over twice its usual December precipitation, burying towns under deep snow. In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, public transport faces long delays, while snow-clearing teams struggle to keep up. Some vehicles have become stuck, slowing efforts to reopen routes.
Vladimir Petrov, the emergency response chief, is coordinating snow removal across the city. Meanwhile, in the Yelizovsky District, four villages have lost electricity due to the winter storm. Schools in affected areas have sent pupils home early for winter break.
The chaos has also hit air travel, with Yelizovo Airport cancelling or delaying 10 flights. On the roads, closures in the Ust-Bolsheretsky District and Vilyuchinsk have left drivers stranded. Officials warn that more disruptions are likely as snow continues to fall.
Emergency crews are working around the clock to clear snow and restore power. Flights remain grounded, and many roads stay closed until conditions improve. The region’s infrastructure faces days of recovery as the winter storm’s impact lingers.
