Kamala Harris publicly endorsed Pete Buttigieg as her preferred vice-presidential candidate, but The Atlantic raises concerns about the potential risks associated with this choice
In her upcoming book, "107 Days," former Vice President Kamala Harris provides a candid account of her experience as a presidential candidate during the shortest campaign in modern history. The book, set for release on Tuesday, offers a behind-the-scenes look at her journey that began after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race in July 2024.
The title, "107 Days," refers to the number of days between Biden's announcement that he would not seek reelection and Harris' announcement that she would run for president. According to excerpts from the memoir obtained by The Atlantic, Harris considered Pete Buttigieg as her potential running mate.
Harris wrote that Buttigieg has the talent to frame liberal arguments in a way that makes it possible for conservatives to hear them. However, she ultimately decided against choosing him due to concerns about voter reactions to having a gay man and a Black woman on the ballot.
Harris told supporters in early August 2024 that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz fit the criteria she sought in a running mate, including being a fighter for the middle class and a unifying leader. A source close to the selection process told The Atlantic at the time that Harris chose Walz due to his executive experience and strong record of accomplishment for middle class families.
Buttigieg's team declined to comment when contacted by the website. Harris wrote in her memoir that she and Buttigieg were both sad about the decision. The Atlantic has not independently reviewed the excerpts from Harris' memoir.
The book also criticizes Democrats for allowing Biden to make the decision on running for reelection alone, stating that the choice should not have been "left to an individual's ego." The Atlantic has not reported on any comments from Buttigieg's team regarding Harris' book.
Harris' book, "107 Days," promises to offer an insightful and revealing look into her presidential campaign, with a focus on the decisions she made and the challenges she faced along the way.
