Kamala Harris Steps Away from Political Office, Criticizes American Democracy

In a recent interview on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she will not be running for any office in the near future, including the 2024 presidential election or the 2026 California governor race. Harris expressed her concerns about the current state of American democracy, stating that she believes the political system is "broken" and not strong enough to defend democratic principles at this time.

The interview took place after CBS's controversial decision to cancel "The Late Show," a move that has been met with criticism from many, including Harris's fellow celebrities and late-night rivals. In the interview, Harris clarified that her decision not to return to the political system does not mean she gives up on the fight. She remains committed to being "part of the fight" for democracy, even if not through immediate office holding.

Harris also mentioned that she did not participate in piling on during President Biden's decision to step down from the campaign. She expressed a desire to travel the country, listen to people, and have conversations without asking for their vote. Harris stated that she predicted many aspects of a Trump presidency, but did not predict the level of capitulation from those considered guardians of the system and democracy.

The cancellation of "The Late Show" has sparked speculation that it could be politically motivated to appease Donald Trump and help secure FCC approval for Paramount's merger with Skydance Media. However, CBS has reportedly stated that the decision to end the show was purely a financial one.

In response to the cancellation, Stephen Colbert hosted a send-up of the viral Coldplay kiss-cam video, while Jon Stewart took aim at CBS and parent company Paramount in a segment on his show. A gospel choir joined Stewart in singing a song with the lyrics, "Go fuck yourself!" directed at CBS and Paramount. Jimmy Kimmel also expressed his love for Colbert and criticized CBS in an Instagram post.

The full interview with Stephen Colbert can be watched online, where Harris discusses her upcoming memoir titled "107 Days" about the 2024 presidential election, as well as her thoughts on the current state of American democracy. Harris stated that it took her months to turn the news back on after her defeat, and she remains hopeful that the system can be fixed and strengthened in the future.

Kamala Harris's decision to step away from political office highlights her commitment to being part of the fight for democracy, even beyond holding immediate office. During the interview, she addressed the controversy surrounding CBS's cancelation of "The Late Show," expressing disappointment but remaining hopeful for a strong media platform that discusses general news, politics, war-and-conflicts, social-media, travel, entertainment, and other critical issues. As she embarks on her upcoming memoir, Harris continues to travel the country and engage in conversations about the future of American democracy.
