Former Vice President Kamala Harris has revealed the inner workings of her vice-presidential nomination process in her upcoming memoir, "107 Days."

Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race in July, leaving Harris with 107 days to win voters over. During this time, Harris considered several potential running mates, including former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, and Governors Pete Buttigieg of Indiana, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, and Wes Moore of Maryland.

According to the excerpt from Harris's memoir, Buttigieg was at the top of an eight-person shortlist for the vice-presidential nomination. Harris considers Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten, friends and describes him as "a sincere public servant with the rare talent of being able to frame liberal arguments in a way that makes it possible for conservatives to hear them."

However, Harris wrote that choosing Buttigieg would have been a risk due to their shared identities. She describes him as "an openly gay man of colour" and herself as "a woman of colour." Harris admits to making a mistake by not advising Biden against running for reelection in 2024, and she considered saying "Screw it, let's just do it" and choosing Buttigieg, but ultimately decided against it due to the potential risks.

Harris also writes that Walz was not her top pick for the vice-presidential nominee. She does not reveal in her book whether Walz knew he was her second choice for the nomination.

Despite her efforts, Harris ultimately lost the 2024 election to Donald Trump. Harris wrote that she "loves Pete" and "loves working with Pete," but the decision to ultimately pass on Buttigieg as her running mate was not an easy one.

The memoir offers a unique insight into the decision-making process of a vice-presidential nomination and the complex considerations that go into choosing a running mate. Harris's memoir, "107 Days," is set to be released soon.
