Kaczyński Floats 'Pax Americana' as EU Alternative

Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of Poland's largest opposition party, the Conservatives (PiS), has suggested Poland could opt for 'Pax Americana' as an alternative to the European Union. This is the closest Kaczyński has come to suggesting Poland's potential exit from the EU.

Kaczyński argued that remaining in the EU could lead to 'a fully united Europe under German domination'. He criticized the EU for being increasingly dominated by Germany and threatening national sovereignty. The PiS, a member of the European Conservative Reformists (ECR) in the European Parliament, has long been skeptical about further European integration, clashing with the EU mainstream on issues like migration, the Green Deal, and expanding EU institutions' scope.

Kaczyński warned that the EU establishment is using authoritarian means to force through its ideas, such as penalizing 'hate speech' and censoring online activity. He mentioned that the Polish center-left government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk prepared draft legislation to implement the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), which could allow government officials to block materials on the internet.

Kaczyński proposed 'Pax Americana' as an alternative to the EU, which would allow for the existence of sovereign states, including a sovereign Poland, constrained only by demands of joint defence within NATO. While the official proposal for a 'Pax Americana' alliance between the USA and Poland is not yet detailed, Kaczyński's suggestion reflects the PiS's growing discontent with the EU's direction.
