K-drama actor Song Young Kyu met a tragic end, discovered deceased in his vehicle, amidst allegations of a DUI incident.
In a shocking turn of events, South Korean actor Song Young Kyu was found deceased in his car in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on August 4, 2022. The Yongin Dongbu Police Station confirmed the incident after an acquaintance reported it.
Song's death occurred at the age of 55, born in April 1970. The exact cause of his death remains unknown, with no signs of foul play reported at the scene. An investigation is ongoing, and authorities plan to question family members and close associates to better understand the circumstances.
Prior to his untimely death, Song was celebrated for his numerous K-drama credits. He made his debut in 1994 through an animated show Taoist Meoteol. His acting features were included in The Escape of the Seven: Resurrection, Destined With You, Big Bet (and its sequel), Narco-Saints, Tale of the Nine-Tailed, Hot Stove League, Partners for Justice and many more shows.
Song was also a special professor in the Department of Acting Arts at Semyung University and a cast member of the play "Shakespeare In Love." However, he stepped down from the play following a controversial DUI incident on June 19, 2022, in Yongin City, South Korea. A witness reported the incident to the police, and a breathalyzer test indicated his blood alcohol content was over 0.08%.
Subsequent reports suggested that Song had been drinking with his acquaintances before driving himself home on the day of the incident. Following the arrest, he was removed from several acting projects, including his final performances in the 2025 K-dramas, The Winning Try and The Defects.
Despite the DUI incident, Song continued to work, making guest appearances in shows such as Oh My Ghost Clients, The Haunted Place, Love Scout and The Tale of Lady Ok this year. The SBS sports drama The Winning Try commenced its broadcast on July 25, the same day contentious headlines about Song became public.
As the investigation into Song's death continues, fans and the entertainment industry mourn the loss of a talented actor. No suicide note was found at the scene, and the case surrounding his death remains a mystery.
