Mats Hummels Bids Emotional Farewell in Dortmund's 1-2 Pre-Season Loss to Juventus

Mats Hummels' final match for Borussia Dortmund was a poignant affair, ending in a 1-2 defeat against Italian record champions Juventus Turin. The pre-season friendly, held at the sold-out Signal Iduna Park on August 6, 2025, was attended by around 81,365 fans who came to bid a fond farewell to the 2014 World Cup winner.

Before the kick-off, Hummels was greeted with cheers and 'Mats Hummels' chants by the adoring crowd. He started the game as captain, showcasing some of his classic passes before being substituted off after Juventus' opening goal, received through a guard of honor and with a standing ovation from his teammates and the fans in appreciation of his service to the club.

Juventus took the lead early in the game, with Andrea Cambiaso scoring their first goal in the 16th minute. Cambiaso added another goal to his tally in the 53rd minute, scoring from a narrow angle. However, Dortmund fought back, with Maximilian Beier scoring a late consolation goal in the 89th minute, much to the delight of the remaining fans who stayed until the final whistle.

The match was disrupted by numerous substitutions, which affected the flow of the game. Despite the loss, the day was a celebration of Hummels' career and contributions to the club.

Niklas Süle replaced Hummels but had to leave the game due to an ankle problem in the 46th minute. The new Bundesliga season will begin for Dortmund against St. Pauli on August 23, at 6:30 PM. Before that, Dortmund will play Rot-Weiss Essen in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on August 18, at 8:45 PM.

As Hummels left the field for the final time, it was clear that he had left a lasting impact on the club and its fans, who will remember him fondly for years to come.
