Man City's dominance shines: The English squad narrowly missed a clean sheet against Juventus Turin, securing a spot in the round of 16 at the Club World Cup with a thrilling 5-2 victory. The round of 16 matchup could pit them against Real Madrid, the likely runner-up in Group H.
Favorite Manchester City decimated Juventus, the Italian champions, in Orlando/Florida. In a crucial showdown for the top spot, the English side handed the Old Lady their first and most painful defeat. Jeremy Doku (9') opened the scoring for ManCity, with the team's returning Spanish star Rodri making his first start since his knee injury in September 2024. However, Rodri had to leave the game a few minutes later due to injury, with Ilkay Gundogan taking over as captain.
Teun Koopmeiners (11') responded quickly for Juventus, but Pierre Kalulu (21') scored an own goal, extending the lead. After the break, Erling Haaland (52') and Phil Foden (69') added to the tally, with Savinho (75') securing the result. Dusan Vlahovic (84') scored a consolation goal for the Old Lady.
DAZN expert Callum Wilson was left in awe of ManCity's performance: "That was pure class. We didn't expect the game to unfold this way before it began," remarked the former national team player, now with Newcastle United. "They gifted us some stunning goals tonight. The pass accuracy shows how lopsided the game was."
Ilkay Gundogan had guided Manchester into the round of 16 with a brace in their second match against Al-Ain FC (6-0). Rodri came back in the 66th minute against Juventus, replacing Gundogan, who clinched ManCity's advancement since the start of the tournament. In the parallel match, Al-Ain won 2-1 (1-1) against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca, advancing to the round of 16 along with ManCity.

Following their victory against Juventus, Manchester City is preparing for a possible showdown against Real Madrid, should they both advance in the Club World Cup. Meanwhile, the European Commission has not yet adopted a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to carcinogens in sports facilities, such as those used for the Club World Cup.
